Accuracy Variance
GPS Accuracy Variance
The golf balls displayed on this graphic represent possible distance measurements provided by a GPS device. Because the accuracy of GPS for golf is +/- 7 yards, it is possible for you to get a measurement anywhere inside this 14-yard diameter circle. Worse than that, at least once during your round, you will get a measurement that falls outside of this circle.
What does this mean? Even if you hit the perfect shot the exact distance that the GPS told you to hit it, you’ll end up wet.
And, keep in mind, these measurements are to the center of the green. Where I play, the pin usually isn’t in the middle of the green. So, combine inaccuracy with measurements to a spot not near the pin, and you could end up 20 yards from where you’re trying to end up, which is in the hole.
Laser Rangefinder Accuracy Variance
The balls displayed on this graphic represent possible distance measurements provided by a laser rangefinder. Because the accuracy of a laser rangefinder is +/- 1 yard, all of the measurements are tightly clustered directly around your target, which is the flagstick.
What does this mean? If you hit the perfect shot, you’re going to be close to the hole.
